Technical
- Do detailed design, building evaluation, repair strategies, reports and contract documents and other components of projects
- Conduct site investigations and evaluations of existing building
- Write evaluation reports and studies including editing and writing new specifications clauses and sections
- Develop preliminary design concepts and probable costs
- Review drawings and specifications for various exterior wall and roofing retrofit/rehabilitation projects
- Do or delegate and supervise construction review; coordinate with and support field staff
- Conduct design checks for other engineers’ work
- Use appropriate quality control guidelines
- Be accountable for maintaining easily referenced project documentation
- Be accountable for quality compliance for your portions of the project
- Identify technical SMEs to shadow and deepen technical knowledge
- Work towards becoming an early adopter of new programs/softwares
- Take on challenging technical elements within projects that remain within your personal technical capabilities and get help when needed
People Development
- Volunteer to be a buddy for new or junior employees
- Develop new areas of expertise by shadowing experts/approaching others for mentorship or taking additional training/courses
- Participate in and lead technical, professional and community organizations
- Get involved in committees or external organizations
- Organize, perform, attend in-house seminars and “brown-bag” lunch sessions on important technical, workplace and new initiatives
- Provide leadership on technical issues –through participation in task groups, practice areas, corporate activities
- Monitor your development against action plans from performance reviews and be accountable for self development
Business
- Develop new contacts both internally and externally through networking within RJC and industry
- Understand the needs of the client by learning their business
- Communicate knowledge and ideas effectively and clearly with clients
- Work on strategic and market-leading business development and proposals and look for additional work opportunities while on site
- Prepare schedule and production budget estimates or assist Project Engineer in doing so
- During development of final stages of the project, detect any deviations from initial scope and complexity, obtain further direction from Project Engineer and adjust for them, avoiding “scope creep”
- Resolve priorities and scheduling conflicts among your own tasks and get advice on priorities as required
- Seek opportunities to be strategic and forward thinking by understanding the future of the industry and looking for new opportunities
Leadership
- Gain awareness of RJC’s various areas of specialty expertise (e.g. through networking, shadowing, mentorship, attending internal events, etc.)
- Complete available Diversity, Equity and Inclusion trainings and frameworks to be a more diverse leader and contribute to team-specific and RJC-wide goals
- Suggest or develop new approaches to internal processes
- Suggest or develop new approaches to production to improve quality
- Responsible for understanding, complying and participating in RJC’s HSE Program including completing required training, participating in hazard identification, assessment and control and informing their People Leader of any unsafe acts or conditions
